Can Being Overweight Cause Knee Issues?

Chronic pain in the knee, relieve pain san jose

Knee pain can be caused by a multitude of things, but the most common has a direct relation to being overweight. Individuals who are overweight have more weight to carry — adding more pressure and stress onto your knees, back, and feet. The stress and pressure affect your ligaments and bones in those areas and can cause irreversible damage if not corrected.

Think of it like this, you put about 1 ½ times your body weight on your knees, so for example a 200 lb man would be putting about 300 lb on his knees daily. It would be best then to lose some weight to take that stress off your knees and give them some relief, here are some tips on how to get started losing weight.

Make your Own Meals

By making your own meals at home, you’ll be able to determine what you eat. Try to add things that are fresh, without preservatives or added sugars. They tend to contribute to weight gain and are associated with causing inflammation.

Kick Bad Habits

Try to remove a sugary or fatty item from your daily diet as it can add up over time. Instead of eating that item replace it with something else, for instance, try replacing sugary drinks with water or the occasional homemade fruit smoothie.

Little Exercise Can Make a Difference

Exercise is great for both losing weight and making you feel good. By doing some exercise every day, you’ll start to feel happier and you’ll lose weight in the process. It doesn’t even have to be that much, maybe just a quick walk around the neighborhood or stretching in front of the TV. To really shred some weight, we offer Fitness Coaching.

Eat More Fiber!

Fiber is the go-to for losing weight as it can make you feel full without there being tons of calories. For instance, a straight salad with nothing on it will usually be about 100 calories and it’ll fill you up pretty well. Fiber also takes longer to digest which will leave you feeling full for much longer than eating some crackers or chips.

Not Eating Before Bed

No more snacks after dinner will greatly help you cut back some pounds, as well as help your body digest and metabolize food. Your body’s digestive system does work best in the day so naturally, we won’t need much after dinner.
